Taking the first step can often be the hardest part of any fitness journey. That's exactly why Ellie Newton created First Steps Run Club - a free, beginner-friendly community run club designed to help people build confidence, improve their wellbeing and discover the benefits of movement in a supportive environment.

We caught up with Ellie to learn more about the club, her passion for helping people become the best version of themselves, and why she believes community events like Community RunFest Rayleigh can have such a positive impact on people's lives.

First Steps Run Club is a free beginner-friendly community run club designed to help people take their first steps into fitness. We meet every Tuesday at 6:45pm at Websters way, Rayleigh.

My run club is a supportive, pressure-free environment where nobody gets left behind. It’s not about running personal bests or competing, it is about putting one foot in front of the other together. Each week, we gradually progress to help build confidence, consistency, fitness, and wellbeing at a pace that suits everyone.

People join for different reasons, whether it’s improving physical health, mental wellbeing, confidence, or meeting new people, the goal is always the same: community, support, and movement.

Why are you passionate about fitness?

I’m passionate about running, fitness, and helping people become the best version of themselves. As a personal trainer, I love supporting both the physical and mental side of fitness while watching people grow in confidence, strength, and wellbeing.

Exercise is not only about feeling better now, but about building a stronger body and mind for the future through improved fitness, cardiovascular health, strength, and injury prevention.

I enjoy bringing people together through movement and creating a supportive community where everyone feels welcome. Whether it’s a run or a gym session, exercise always leaves people feeling happier, stronger, and more positive.

How do you feel Community RunFest will benefit everybody?

What I love most about Community RunFest is that it is bringing people together for positive reasons. Everyone will be arriving with different backgrounds, struggles, goals, and abilities, but for a moment, everyone supports and encourages one another, which is what a real community should be about.

It shows people what they are truly capable of and proves you are never too old or too young to start something new. Community RunFest has no pressure, no judgement, and the day is all about enjoying movement together. I hope it helps people see that fitness can be fun, enjoyable, and something that adds to your life rather than taking it over completely.
