From Couch to 5K to His First 10K: Neill’s Running Journey

At Community RunFest Rayleigh, every runner has their own story. For Neill, taking on the 10K marked another milestone in a running journey that began with a decision to improve his health and fitness.
In January 2025, Neill joined a local bootcamp, which soon led to a boxing fitness group and a football wellbeing group. When the football group later came to an end, he began focusing more of his time on running.
Taking the First Steps
Neill started the Couch to 5K programme in August 2025, graduating in December. Along the way, friends introduced him to parkrun – something that he says completely changed his Saturday mornings.
More recently, he joined Benfleet Running Club, where he has enjoyed the support and camaraderie of fellow runners at parkruns and local events.

His advice for anyone considering starting their own running journey is refreshingly simple:
“Keep getting out there. The hardest part is often stepping out of the front door.”
Neill also recommends Couch to 5K as a great place to start, with plenty of apps available to help new runners gradually build their confidence and fitness.
Taking on His First 10K
Community RunFest Rayleigh presented Neill with his next challenge, his first 10K race.
Rather than following a specific training programme, he continued attending bootcamp and boxing classes alongside running two or three times each week, including parkrun. He also entered a couple of five-mile events beforehand to build his confidence and make sure he was ready for the increased distance.

For Neill, it wasn't just completing the distance that made Community RunFest memorable.
“What I loved most about Community RunFest was its community spirit. As a slower runner, I especially appreciated the encouragement around the course. It’s a fantastic event for Rayleigh and the surrounding area, and I’ll definitely be back next year.”
Giving Something Back
Running has also given Neill the opportunity to support others. He regularly volunteers at parkrun and sees it as a chance to give something back, meet new people and be part of a supportive team.
From taking those first steps with Couch to 5K to crossing the finish line of his first 10K, Neill's journey is a brilliant example of how getting active can build confidence, create new connections and open the door to new challenges.
And we hope to see him back on the Community RunFest Rayleigh start line next year!
